: to recogitate :

On first sight, I read recogitate as regurgitate and winced. There’s something truly off-putting about the word regurgitate, don’t you think? But, come to find out, there’s something equally off-putting about the word recogitate. The meanings are frightfully similar.

Regurgitate = to spit something out that was partially digested.
Recogitate = to think over again.

In either case, ew, something’s not sitting right.

And that’s my current circumstance: something isn’t sitting right. That something is technology, specifically internet technology. What the hell am I doing here? On a website I’ve no idea how to manage? Yet, on Monday, after fielding months of reminders from WordPress, I renewed my plan for another year. And a hundred bucks went poof. I am now recogitating. Very, very seriously recogitating.

I don’t blame WordPress, but oy. There’s no joy in the Publish button. Everything is squares and more squares, squares everywhere. The sameness is mind-numbing. There’s no nuance, no finesse, no whimsy, no freedom. I don’t like the new Editor. I tried to and I’ve failed. The old one was simple and agreeable, almost intuitive. The new one is a straight-up minefield.

A reasonable person would learn how to use it.

Well, I’m not reasonable and I don’t want to. I don’t want to force round ideas into stiff, unyielding boxes. That’s been the story of my life and I’m exhausted. I want to break the rules, violate space, zigzag over and under and around borders. I want to take on different shapes and sizes, whatever suits my mood. I want to bust outta here.

Clearly, it’s time for a vacation.

  1. I wish I could just transfer from my MacBook Pages (cut & paste) and have it be exactly what I designed, but that would be a silly request. My real reason for commenting here is to say how nicely your complaint is composed. It’s sort of a poetic critique. It even has a bit of rhythm & rhyme 🎵 Nice work 🙂

    1. Theoretically, you could. Just export the page as a pdf and import it into your website as an image. I tried it once with an InDesign document, but encountered too many sizing issues. It didn’t work for me. At all.

Aw, thanks. I’m working on getting my sea legs back :o)

  2. I agree wholeheartedly. I hate the new editor and am still using the old one. There is no way I am paying to for that box thing.

    1. Really? The old one still works? I tried it for a while, but it was as frustrating and unresponsive as the nesting boxes, so I gave up. I only pay to eliminate the advertising (Trump ads were showing up).

  3. Thank you for being the yin to my yang. You see, I’m comfortable in square boxes. It may be boring in here, but it’s predictable and safe. My life would be terribly dull, though, without the curves and squiggles of creative types like you. Please keep blurring the lines, zigging the zags and breaking through the boundaries. It’s those things that add colour to monochrome lives like mine.

    1. You know what’s peculiar? I’m compulsive. All straight lines and right angles, rigid order and predictable sameness at home — it lulls me into thinking life is orderly and manageable. But in my head? It’s a Benny Hill show on endless loop. Explain that. I can’t.
